Hi everybody - The big day is almost here - the B.I.K.E.Syracuse Tour De ‘Cuse is on Sunday, June 22nd. Our young friends at b.i.k.e.Syracuse are looking forward to seeing a big OCC turnout at their fundraising ride. The printed and web ride schedules are a bit short of information so here are some details: registration is $20 and starts at 7:00 AM in Skiddy Park and the ride starts at 9:00. This is an all day event so you can come down and start anytime between 9:00 and 3:00. People will be riding all day and you can do as many laps around the route as you want. There is safe, monitored parking at Blodgett School which is adjacent to Skiddy Park. Skiddy Park is on Tioga street off of W. Fayette street just west of downtown. There will be lots of volunteers there to answer questions. The route is 20 miles and follows the original Tour De ‘Cuse route some of the way. Shorter options are available - maps are at the start - and there will be a couple of water stops along the way. Food will be available at the Park - music and various activities will be going on all day. New this year is the chance to sponsor a b.i.k.e.Syracuse kid to do laps around the park. This lets the kids help support their own bike club.

The Onondaga Cycling Club has partnered with the Wine House and several other businesses in Manlius and Cazenovia to put on a wine tasting and benefit for the B.I.K.E. Syracuse program. The event will be held at the Wine House at 6:30 pm, on June 19th. This will be a fun social gathering for Club members and many others in the community with 100% of the proceeds going to B.I.K.E. Syracuse.

Beginning June 14th, Swain Resort will be offering lift served mountain biking every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm during the 2008 MTB season. We are proud to offer a fantastic venue where mountain bikers of all ability levels can hone their skills in a truly magnificent natural setting. Come experience over 80 acres of insane downhill terrain with some amazing features thrown in for your ultimate enjoyment.

I’d like to thank all those who organized volunteers for different aspects of this year’s Syracuse Race Weekend. Many have been thanking their volunteers here, but I wanted to thank these people who were essential for the success of the races. They include

• Dave Knaebel — crit marshals
• Doug Taylor — pace and wheel cars for the road race
• Mike Lyon — road race and time trial marshals
• Jochen Woicke — registration

On other thanks, I think some people fell through the cracks, like Bob Spear, who drove the pace car today, and Wayne Miner, who handled publicity. Others did yoeman work, like Mike Lyon, who was everywhere.

Finally, I wanted to thank Marcello Prattico for all the work he put in this year in organizing the race. The club owes you a sincere and heart-felt thank you.

In it: Bike-to-Work Month, Other Upcoming Events, Earth-Day Clean-up Thank You, B.I.K.E. Syracuse, and more

The board recently agreed to add cell phone numbers to the sign up sheets. This is primarily to aid ride leaders. Sometimes a rider forgets to sign back in and the ride leader is left wondering what to do. The occasional ride leader drives the course backwards, but that isn’t likely to be useful if the rider is lost and is even less useful if the missing rider forgot to sign back in (by far the most common state of affairs). With cell numbers, the rider should be able to easily contact the rider. Thus, when you sign in, we’d appreciate it if you’d fill in your cell number. I guess you can say that OCC joins the 21st century!

Also, note that the directions in the ride leader packet describe the specifics of leading leisure rides.

Originally, we had planned on this Saturday’s ride starting at noon. This was to accommodate newly minted graduates of a cycling class put on by Dave Gordon under the auspices of the League of American Bicyclists.
Unfortunately, due to a breakdown in communication that lead to no publicity for the classes, nobody signed up. Thus, we’ll start Saturday’s ride at the usual 10:00 for this time of year.

We’ll try again with the class next summer.
