The 6th Annual Finger Lakes Ride for Missing Children is Friday, Sept 19, 2008

August

22

2008

Sponsored by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children/New York (NCMEC/NY), the Finger Lakes Ride for Missing Children is a 100-mile ride made by bicycle riders or “Friends of Missing Children” that raises funds to support prevention education programs and to remember all missing children. More than 2,000 children are reported missing in the United States each day, some in our own community. For most families, this is only a brief scare as the child turns up in a few minutes or hours. But for some, the nightmare of a missing child becomes a grim reality. NCMEC’s mission is to help recover missing children, protect all children from sexual exploitation, and assist in the prevention of these crimes.

Funds raised by the Finger Lakes Ride for Missing Children remain in the local community to provide case assistance and spearhead prevention education services across upstate New York. During 2006 NCMEC/NY:

  • Distributed 504,160 posters of missing children.
  • Assisted in the recovery of 1,886 children through poster distribution and case assistance.
  • Distributed over 212,672 pieces of literature prevention education literature.

  • Conducted 812 education programs with 68,494 participants.
  • Coordinated 46 child identification programs with 4,730 children and adults.
  • Conducted 5 training programs with 250 participants held at the Polisseni Law Enforcement Center.

Funds raised by the Finger Lakes Ride for Missing Children remain in the local community to provide case assistance and spearhead prevention education services across upstate New York. During 2006 NCMEC/NY:

This is not a race….. We ride together as a Team - averaging 15-18 mph on the flat portion of the course escorted by members of the New York State Police, local police and sheriff’s departments. This means traffic is halted for the riders! Our destinations along the route are designated schools where our arrival is the highlight of a safety education program that has been attended by the children of each school. Imagine the impression the riders make on the school children as they see over 100 bicycle riders, riding 2×2 escorted by several police cars with lights flashing and sirens blaring! The visits are electrifying as hundreds of children and adults cheer the riders as they enter the school grounds

Weekend Rides

July

31

2008

This Saturday’s ride is sponsored by Mike and Nancy Lyon. As in past years, they are kindly offering food and swimming in their pool after the ride. Here’s a map of the start location, 6981 Kingdom Rd. in Memphis.

For the ride this Sunday, I’ve added a 45 mile option in addition to the given 62 mile choice. I’ll have cues and the map for it at the ride. Also, the map on the web site lists the start as the Best Western in Tully. As we have done for several years, let’s instead start at east end of the Tully Central Schools parking lot. It is .5 miles east on Hwy 80 after the I-81 exit (#14) for Tully.

Annual Picnic

July

23

2008

Mark Your Calendar - The Annual OCC Family Picnic and Swap Meet is this Saturday July 26th from 11 AM to 4 PM at Highland Forest. We are again using the Torbert Shelter located above the main parking lot across from the old office, which is a few hundred yards beyond the turn for the new Skyline Lodge - simply stay on
the main road. We do NOT have to pay the $1.00 parking fee since parking is included in the shelter rental fee. Bring the family, friends, something to grill and, if you’re feeling sociable, a dish or treat to pass. In the past, deserts have been the main “pass-arounds” Soda, beer, and chips will be provided as will hot dogs for those who forget to bring something. Bring your mountain bikes to try the great trails or to pre-ride the race course for the following week’s Highland Forest Classic. Last year’s bike-parts swap meet was a success, so if you have extra parts or swag you’d like to sell, trade, or pass on, bring them along — your old stuff might be just what somebody else needs to fix or complete a bike!

The Saturday morning club road ride will leave at 10:00 from the lower parking lot at the foot of the sledding hill and should return in time for lunch. Since there will be some extra food and drink, come on up the hill and relax with your friends after the ride. Last year we had a great turn-out and a good time was had by all. Call or email Chad Bradshaw (446-0936, BradshaC@upstate.edu) for info or questions.

Wednesday Ride: In Reverse & Diner @ Edgewater Grill

July

14

2008

We’ll be doing this Wednesday’s ride in the reverse direction. There are several reasons: right turns are a bit safer on fast rides, the number of riders we have now will more easily go through B’ville when we’re split up at the end of the ride, and a bit a variety is plus. The ride looks remarkably different in reverse. Cues will be available at the ride; the map as-is works fine (of course, you have to reverse the arrows).

For diner after the ride, let’s go to Edgewater Grill in B’ville (which we’ll pass on the ride). It is on the north side of the Seneca River on Oswego St. / Rt. 48 in B’ville. Here’s the map.

Free Bicycle Safety and Maintenance Clinic

July

8

2008

Grab your bicycle and helmet, or just simply join us, as young and old are invited to a free bicycle safety and basic maintenance workshop to be held Saturday, July 12th at the Soule Branch Library. The library is located on Springfield Rd, across from Le Moyne College, and the event will run from 2 – 4:00 PM.

Children are encouraged to bring their bicycle to learn basic bike maintenance and how to change a flat. Learn why wearing a helmet is not only smart, but cool as well (low cost helmets will be available on a sliding-scale basis). Find out from the experts:

  • What traffic laws apply to people riding bicycles?
  • Can a cyclist ride on roadways or is riding restricted to shoulders?
  • What are the proper hand and arm signals?
  • Do riders under age fourteen have to wear protective headgear?

The event will take place rain or shine so come on out and join the fun!

This event is made possible through the generousity of the Bike Loft and the partnership of the Onondaga County, the City of Syracuse, the County Libraries and the Onondaga Cycling Club.

10Kan Bike Race

June

This year’s 10KanRun, on September 20, also features a 20 mile bike race. It starts in Oswego. Further information is available.

Almost 4th of July Century

June

20

2008

This year’s version of that OCC summer tradition is taking place on Saturday, the fifth.

The route has only been ridden twice [the old historian was incorrect in the newsletter] since it’s incorporation into our lexicon in 1998. The RL that year said: “Eighty-five miles of rain AND a flat. We were comforted by the thought that it could have been worse, much worse, like the Giro d’Italia of 1909.”
Sure enough, on the second outing we had rain again. In fact, the thundershowers were so heavy in 2001, the last time the Firecracker 100 has been scheduled, that only two people rode the 100-miler. Believe it or not, one person has ridden both of them.
